A Surprise for our Girls

Quite some time ago, we went to our neighbors to ask if we could buy a little playhouse that was sitting unused. We thought, ok, I thought it would make a really cute chicken house. We were thinking of getting chickens for Gullringstorp and had yet decided on how to house them. This little playhouse seemed perfect.

It’s tradition to build a replica of the main house when houses are being built in Sweden.  They are so cute. The children have a tiny replica of the house they live in. It’s also tradition to allow children to make decisions. The young lady who had clearly outgrown her play house, refused to sell it to us.  I was disappointed of course , but she had that right to say no.

We decided to renovate the outdoor stable bathroom/shower house. So now our chickens have a real apartment. They have 3 rooms, a front door  with steps , a hatch door on the side, a heater,  windows and lights.

We have watched the cute little playhouse fall into disrepair from non use over the past year. Poor little house. While in London, my husband was asked if we wanted this little playhouse, at no charge. My husband accepted and said we would find good use for it. The sad little   playhouse made its way into our goat enclosure. With much TLC this house is now a cute addition to our enclosure and a place to have hay and shelter for our girls.

Neighbor Party August 2013

At a Neighbor Party, the hosts, organize the entire evening for us. There are the games that start the evening off, then we retire to indoors for a beautifully laid buffet. After the meal comes desert along with coffee, then godis (candy snacks) and snaps and cognac. There will be active conversation from the recent harvest, to hat or straw bales to tractors. Information is shared and everyone, up and down our table is engaged in a conversation. After tractors, our end of the table was relegated to discussions about goats, then the soap making business, then tractors again. Our hosts were kind enough to arrange for a mini bus to pick us all up at preplanned locations. This was so kind and allowed everyone to be  free to drink as much as they wanted and not have to worry about the drive home. When we arrived at our host’s Inn (Värdshuset) in the woods just minutes away from Gullringstorp, our hosts greeted us outside in the garden. We were told of the events of the evening. I am pretty sure that this tradition is only in our neck of the woods, but there are outdoor activities well planned out for all the guests to participate in. Everyone enjoys the fun , no matter how silly. It’s great to see all of our hard-working neighbors leave the worried of the world behind and just have FUN! Our Planned evening:

Station 1 :  Drinks!     We walked through the beautiful woods and came upon the first station. There we had our choice of drink,  beer, whisky etc.

Station 2: Driving!   We were all wondering what we would be driving. We soon found out.

Station 3 : Tossing Frogs !  Oh dear, I all could think was, poor little frogs!

Station 4: Hot Air Balloons! We had  no idea. We soon found out.

Station 5: Up  to our waist in water !!! Oh dear! Station 6: Tire toss! Tire toss???? Oh dear.

Station 5 : Up to your waist in water !  We weren’t actually! there was a glass of water on a piece of paper and the object was to pull the paper without spilling the water. What fun we had and so many laughs

Spring Weekend at Gullringstorp May 4 & 5

This is a typical Spring  weekend here at Gullringstorp. We have the goats and chickens to care for and  the property. There are the usual chores on a farm property. Things need mending, fixing and just plain tending to.

The cats and fish that are in the house get fed first thing. Then off to the stable with my bucket of chopped veggies and fruit and molasses water for the mothers. Max always joins me and Leif follows later. I make a quick check on the new mothers and their new babies and when all is fine, I say hello to all the others on the other side of the stable. Max and I fill a wheelbarrow full with hay to take out to prepare the enclosure for everyone who goes out. The boys were so happy to go out as were the other ladies and girls.

We have with the help of Leif and my daughter, finally got names for all the new babies, even the little boy who will be sold.

Iris’ daughter is Blossom and her son who will be sold to a good home is Florian

Pansy’s daughter is Lilly

Poppy’s son is Huckleberry

Pumpkin’s daughters are, Willow and Violet

Peanut is still a mystery, no babies and no heats for the past 5 months! Hummmmmm

Once everyone is out and happy, I returned to the stable to tend to the new mommies and babies.

After I take care of Iris and her children, I work on the other 3 families, starting with Pansy.  Then I took care of the box of Poppy and her baby boy. I took all that was needed into Poppy’s box to be able to take care of both boxes. It’s just easier for me.

After the mothers and babies have been taken care of, I went to check on the other goats in the enclosure. They had run themselves out and all resting:

Little Surpise and Nanna found a nice place to rest

Petunia found a nice place in the sun

I was a bit worried about some of the ladies out in the enclosure:

Petunia, Surprise and Ivy have never been separated from Iris. They are doing fine as long as they can hold conversations with her from the stable.

Rose is such a mamma’s baby that she never likes to be without Pumpkin. She is doing better than I though, finding a little group to attach herself to in the enclosure. She will stand and eat hay with Peanut and her mother Hilda.

Leif has been busy with our firewood supply. this weekend he has been cleaving the logs he cut earlier. I think I posted earlier that he was cleaving the wood, mistake, he was chopping. This weekend he cleaved the logs with his new machine:

He has a neat old tool that helps lift the logs

Once the log was cleaved in half it was cleaved again  into smaller logs to fit into our burner in the basement

Leif was smart and set up the cleaving machine right in front of the outdoor wood storage. After the log has been cleaved, he can just toss it in the storage

Looking at all those beautiful logs, I got an idea; why not bring ion some logs for the babies to play on. Poor Leif, I never run out of ideas and ways for him to help. But he was kind and asked me to pick out the logs I wanted from the big pile. When I found the 3 perfect ones he brought them into the stable and placed them where they belonged. He thought he should cleave them in half so they would have a flat bottom to sit stable in the boxes. When I said no , they are fine as they are he was not so sure. I was.

Gullringstorp Goats out for the First Time in Months

This morning was a perfect day for the goats to be out. No wind, no rain, no snow.  It will be a short day however, due to the darkness coming at 3 pm.   That’s ok because the ladies were getting cabin fever and even a short day out is better than no time out at all.

The ladies got to get out but not the boys. I know, I know what about the boys? Well it’s just not that easy and it requires some time and attention outdoors which was not on my schedule today. You see the issue is, my baby boys. I will give my babies more time in the boy’s box so they feel a part of their new little herd. I have several sub-herds within my complete herd. Once I feel Phillip and Winston have been accepted completely by the others, then I will feel comfortable letting them out with the others. In addition to that aspect of buck life, my little fellas have no previous knowledge of the electric fence which surrounds their enclosure. This will be a day that requires both of our attentions. The boys will have to be “introduced” to the fence. This is a ritual that I can not do. This is my husband’s job to place the tiny noses to the fence for what will be hopefully the one and only time their noses come into contact with it.

Well today was the day for the little girls and my ladies to go out and kick up their heels a bit:

After setting the electric fence, I walked into the stable. What a strange sensation to see my empty stable. It was so quiet and empty.

It was great fun watching all my goats out and running and literally kicking up their cute little heels. With the cold temperatures we have been having, our ground feels like concrete. It feels great to walk on it and the sound of my goat’s hooves as they run is just a wonder. They sound like a herd of galloping horses.

Well my ladies didn’t make it to 3 this afternoon. The sun has not set yet, a few minutes more and it will, but, it started snowing!

My ladies had a wonderful time out today the 7th day of January in the New Year 2013.

Grattis på födelsedagen Malin

All of our nearest neighbors who get together on a regular basis at one of our 2 available pubs; came together to celebrate a Birthday. We were at Åsa and Kjell’s pub for the celebration party for their daughter Malin’s 40th Birthday.

Because the weather threatened rain for the evening, we drove the short distance to the event. We arrived ahead of our other neighbors that walked . Everyone waits on the road, either in front of their house or near their house for the neighbors to walk by and then join the group. We have done this but just not this particular evening. Shortly after our arrival, they  also arrived:

Our entertainment for the evening was a great band. The music was a music that is very Swedish known as “dans band”.

We had a treat when Bosse sung for us:

We danced into the night and all had a wonderful time. I had a ball so much so that we excused ourselves, went home just across the road, milked our goats, fed them and tucked them in for the night and we returned for more fun. We all really enjoy each others company and we have a great time together.

I was among many who wished Malin a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!
