Tender Moments at Gullringstorp

Fiona, who is Keriana’s daughter is raised by both her mother and aunt Alika. Keriana and Alika have a love hate relationship. They fight when the fence is down, but if I think of separating them and moving one to another box, they have a real fit. So that’s out of the question. They are living peacefully with the fence up between them as they share a big box.

Fiona makes it very clear that she loves Alika as much as she loves her mommy:

Gullringstorp Goats out for the First Time in Months

This morning was a perfect day for the goats to be out. No wind, no rain, no snow.  It will be a short day however, due to the darkness coming at 3 pm.   That’s ok because the ladies were getting cabin fever and even a short day out is better than no time out at all.

The ladies got to get out but not the boys. I know, I know what about the boys? Well it’s just not that easy and it requires some time and attention outdoors which was not on my schedule today. You see the issue is, my baby boys. I will give my babies more time in the boy’s box so they feel a part of their new little herd. I have several sub-herds within my complete herd. Once I feel Phillip and Winston have been accepted completely by the others, then I will feel comfortable letting them out with the others. In addition to that aspect of buck life, my little fellas have no previous knowledge of the electric fence which surrounds their enclosure. This will be a day that requires both of our attentions. The boys will have to be “introduced” to the fence. This is a ritual that I can not do. This is my husband’s job to place the tiny noses to the fence for what will be hopefully the one and only time their noses come into contact with it.

Well today was the day for the little girls and my ladies to go out and kick up their heels a bit:

Wheeeee

Wheeeee  such fun they are all having running and just being silly!

After setting the electric fence, I walked into the stable. What a strange sensation to see my empty stable. It was so quiet and empty.

Empty boxes, what a strange sight, no goats....

It was great fun watching all my goats out and running and literally kicking up their cute little heels. With the cold temperatures we have been having, our ground feels like concrete. It feels great to walk on it and the sound of my goat’s hooves as they run is just a wonder. They sound like a herd of galloping horses.

Well my ladies didn’t make it to 3 this afternoon. The sun has not set yet, a few minutes more and it will, but, it started snowing!

My ladies had a wonderful time out today the 7th day of January in the New Year 2013.

Goat Bling

I don’t know about you, but I am so down about Sandy that I need a pick -me-up. Here is what I chose to pick me up and put a smile on my face.

I hope it makes you smile:

Our Little Herd in the Enclosure as Hilda Goes into Labor

Well, we got Hilda back into her clean box just in time for her to have a clean and comfortable labor. She was brought back into her box around 2 pm while the others remained in the enclosure. Hilda’s absence was noticed immediately. It took some time before all the goats, boys included, to resume their activities of eating grass, playing and relaxing.

She gets her baby back after he has spent some time in the boy’s box after they are brought back in, to enjoy, guess what, more hay! Nanna has to find her place in the herd again, because she is not tending a baby so the dynamics are a bit different. She is doing well, not perfect, but as well as can be expected.

New Mothers and Babies Visit the Large Enclosure for the First Time, August 3, 2012!

The day began really badly for us here at Gullringstorp! We had every intention to bring out our new mothers and babies today. It was overcast, cold and threatened rain. Not a good first day to be in the large enclosure. So, disappointed, I fed every one in their box and just opened doors. The morning was just one big rain threat.

The sun finally came out and so did our little gang of new mommies and babies and a couple of pals. Ivy would never have gone into the enclosure without her pals Petunia and Iris so they were allowed to join the new families.

Here is the first day out in t he enclosure for Toby, Fiona Pip and Surprise and their mothers:

We were only able to leave the new mothers and babies after each baby had been introduced to the electric fence. these babies are very close to their mothers so we had no babies near the fence. Oh I forgot, Toby was the first to get a zap and boy was he a big baby after that. He didn’t want to leave mommy Nanna’s side. It was my job to capture each remaining baby and my husband took them to the fence and they each got a zap on the nose. This way we could leave them comfortably with the knowledge that the babies wouldn’t be silly and try to get through the fence .

For a first day out in the large enclosure, it really went far better than expected. Every goat adult and baby alike were truly happy and excited to be in the large space. They had out grown both baby yards. Now we must decide when to introduce the other members of the herd who were now in the play yards, temporarily.

Welcome back for some video action of the first day’s adventures.
