The Maternity Ward at Gullringstorp Part I

The summer is here and not only is the grass and veggie garden growing in the warm Swedish sun, but so are the three goats in our Maternity Ward.

I know they have a wonderfully plush pasture to enjoy all day long, but we bought them all a present. Look:

A huge bale of fresh hay! Yummy !!

They get a couple of buckets to enjoy out in the pasture. They really love to have their hay in a big bucket. Seems to be fun to stick a head in and enjoy.

Pumpkin loves to put her nose in to get at the best hay further down in the bucket.

Sometimes, that bucket of hay makes a nice pillow:

All three ladies are growing and doing the pregnant ladies waddle. They sway gently from side to side as they cross the pasture. There is something really beautiful about how they gently move around with their baby bumps moving from side to side. Here are some photos of the ladies as they are on their way, somewhere:

In addition to their gift of a new huge bale of hay, they often get bales of straw placed in the enclosure. Straw is wonderful for numerous purposes  and everyone loves them even the pregnant ladies:

Frida and her kids, Keriana and Flynn share a bale. The first thing to do with a new bale is have a taste.

All the goats love to rub their sides against the bale. I think it really feels nice on those baby bumps. Pumpkin seems to like it!

I guess when I am not available to give a tummy rub, the bale of straw works.

Not only do my ladies waddle around the enclosure, but they lay down a lot more often now than before. Just like us ladies, they tire easily and become a bit exhausted in the heat. We ladies sometimes have difficulty getting up from a comfy chair or couch, my ladies have difficulty getting down. I guess they have a bit more to lower and it’s not so easy. It takes a bit of time, but they get down and stay as long as possible.

All goats go down buy bending their front legs first then lower themselves down. When you have a large, heavy baby bump, you just don’t go down so easily or quickly.

Pumpkin was the last of our ladies to be bred, she is not due until September and is not as large as the other two ladies. When Pumpkin finally gets down, she really enjoys it:

Just like us ladies, my ladies have cravings while pregnant. Maybe not exactly cravings, but they have some changes in their appetite. They usually get chopped carrots, apples and any greens I can find for them, as an evening treat. Now that they are pregnant, some will want only apples and others will want only apples. I try very hard to accommodate their new tastes. My ladies still love their fresh grass, hay and straw.

After all the eating,  all my ladies like Frida with Keriana,  take their rests in the afternoon and evening:

All in all,  I can honestly say,  that conditions here at the Maternity Ward at Gullringstorp are going very well. My ladies seem to be happy, large and a bit heavier, but happy just the same. We pamper them with extra unexpected treats and just some good ‘ol TLC. I love to spend as much time with them as I can. I give each one some special customized attention. I have learned what each goat needs and wants and expects. It is my pleasure to pamper my ladies while also attending to all the other goats at Gullringstorp.

Welcome back to the Maternity Ward at Gullringstorp Part II.
